Learning Music? – Here is something that will help

According to music terminology the difference in pitch between two given tones is an interval. So, it would not be incorrect to say a series of intervals could be called as melody. Notes should not be changed in case there no sonic character and color exists within the intervals as there would not be any reason for doing it. Musicians need to be able to completely understand and control over intervals so that they could be used and reproduced effectively.

Musicians must also be able to recognize harmonic intervals where notes are played simultaneously like chords are played on piano, guitar, or horn or string sections, in addition to melodic intervals where intervals between notes played separately. To effectively utilize harmonic intervals musicians must know how to differentiate between them.

Identifying between intervals one of the skills inculcated to the musicians by ear training. These days a number of colleges and university music programs are demanding for it and as it can be learnt through a variety of methods individually it is very simple to acquire this skill.

To be able to distinguish between different intervals properly i.e. relative pitch there’s a need to use the different listening-intensive techniques. These exercises require the student to get the picture and reproduce the intervals and include activities such as listening to and then repeating a given series of notes.

To help students develop the ability to identify intervals instructors usually use Solfege-based methods. These methods can prepare the students for a variety of musical environments that they’ll encounter such as encouraging students to focus on the quality of the notes themselves or emphasizing on the context etc.

Once a musician acquire the ability to grasp intervals musical boundaries would be broadened for him. The key to sight-reading and singing, transcribing music, playing by ear etc is the understanding of intervals. Identifying music intervals is considered indispensable by many educators and professional musicians and this skill can only be attained through ear training.

If teachers regularly include interval training in their music lesson plans they’ll find that students will quickly understand and remember the sound of the musical intervals, and become much better musicians as a result.
